The SFRO was founded in 1990, a logical extension of the Radiotherapy Section of the french cociety of medical radiology. Following the success of the Radiotherapy Congress that took place during the World Radiology Congress in Paris in 1989, this well-structured and dynamic group wanted to become autonomous. This would meet the need to group together radiotherapy professionals whose teaching, qualifications, interests and working conditions differed greatly from those of their radiology colleagues.

The SFRO welcomes doctors, physicists, biologists whose main activities are oncology and radiotherapy ; in 2000 almost all French practising radiation oncologists had become members. An annual congress has been organized since 1990 with an ever increasing participation, both French and non French speaking. It has built privileged relationships not only with other learned societies but also with the National trade union for radiation oncologists (SNRO).

Today the membership has reached over 500 (as compared to 130 in its first year) and includes colleagues from other European countries, Africa, Canada and the USA. It is in close contact with the other European societies. Combined actions have taken place eg in presenting the consensual point of view of radiation oncologists to the authorities. Little by little the opinion of the SFRO has been increasingly solicited by the various administrative authorities. Together with the SNRO it has set up the teaching structure (Association de Formation Continue en Oncologie Radiothérapie) which is indispensable for preparing re-certification. Many other joint activities are in place : official report, presentation of the radiotherapy of the irradiated patient.

In order to promote its discipline, the SFRO has set up the communications committee that presents the progress in radiotherapy to both the general as well as medical public (Lettre de la SFRO, internet site). The society information organ is the journal CANCER-RADIOTHERAPIE, the only French language radiotherapy journal and which contains details of the congress proceedings.

The SFRO is a young society which aspires to be a meeting place for all types of radiotherapy work experiences while at the same time enabling the promotion and development of a little known discipline. It contributes to the enhancement of the technical standard and scientific knowledge of its members. The demand for patronage at the numerous scientific meetings is proof that our aim is both appreciated and recognised.

The future of our society depends on the interest of its members, particularly of the younger ones, who are taking up more and more important positions both withinthe society proceedings and during congress meetings. It must show and ever greater interest in the progress, information and technology transfers of a 100 year old discipline that is evolving continuously.
